Phase Relation

Asheesh Kamal-Official Thursday, March 23, 2017

What is phase relation?
A phase relation is the assembling together of two or more of a) b) subjects (Basic or Compound) isolate ideas (iii one and the same facet, or isolate ideas in one and the same array). Assembling is done to express one or the other of possible relations between the components of the assembly. The result is a complex subject, complex isolate idea, or a complex array isolate idea, as the case may be. Each component in the assembly, in its turn, is called a "phase". They are called "phase 1" and "phase 2" as determined by their sequence in the assemblage.
Types of Phase Relation in Colon Classification
There are three types of phase relation. The relation may be between
i)                    Two or more subjects, known as Inter-Subject Phase Relation; or
ii)                    Two or more isolates within one and-die same schedule of facet isolates, known as Intra-Facet Phase Relation; or
iii)                  Two or more isolates within one and the same array of isolates, known as IntraA" Phase Relation.
Kinds of Phase Relation in Colon Classification
In colon Classification six kinds of Phase relations have been recognised as given below with their indicator digits.
• General
• Bias
• Comparison
• Difference
• Tool
• Influence
The table of the indicator digits is shown below:
Phase Relations in Classification Schemes
In Colon Classification
In Colon Classification, phase relations have been explicitly identified and categorised into types and kinds, as has been described in Sections 8.3.1 and 8.3.2. It has provided specific rules for classifying complex subjects. Just as facet analysis has given a logical and helpful framework for classifying multifaced subjects, phase analysis has provided a similar frame work to deal with interdisciplinary subjects. These devices have been based on theoretical foundations to obtain a helpful and practical arrangement of documents on library shelves and of entries in catalogues and bibliographies tuned to user requirements.
In Dewey Decimal Classification
Dewey Decimal Classification, being an enumerative system of classification, has very limited provision for the explicit use of phase analysis and synthesis. Its recognition of complex subjects, however, can be noted in the provision given for classifying such subjects.
In Universal Decimal Classification
In Universal Decimal Classification, the relation sign colon (:) is used to indicate all types and kinds of phase relations. The same sign is also used for facet relations. The following examples illustrate these statements.
In Bibliographic Classification
According to Mills, the concept of Phase is recognised by Bibliographic Classification and "The hyphen (-) is now generally used as a phase link, comparable with the UDC Colon."
